Pesticide News Story: September 16-18 FIFRA SAP to review Chlorpyrifos Toxicity Profile; Nominations Sought

For Release: July 11, 2008

The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act Scientific Advisory Panel (FIFRA SAP) will hold a 3-day meeting to consider and review the Agency's evaluation of the toxicity profile of chlorpyrifos. The Agency is focusing on studies that evaluate the effects of chlorpyrifos on infants and children from in utero and/or post-natal exposures and on studies that evaluate population variability with respect to response to chlorpyrifos. This meeting, originally scheduled for July 15-18, 2008, has been rescheduled for September 16-18, 2008 and will be held at Holiday Inn - Rosslyn at Key Bridge, 1900 North Fort Myer Drive, Arlington, Virginia 22209.

The Agency is accepting additional nominations for candidates to serve as ad hoc members of the FIFRA SAP for this meeting. Nominations were previously sought through an April 18, 2008 FR Notice. Nominees need to submit their name, occupation, position, address, and telephone number on or before July 23, 2008, to Sharlene R. Matten, with the Office of Science Coordination and Policy in the Office of the EPA Assistant Administrator for Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances by phone at (202) 564-0130; or by email Sharlene Matten (matten.sharlene@epa.gov).

The Agency is also soliciting additional public oral and written comments as stated in the Federal Register Notice. The Agency encourages that written comments be submitted by September 9, 2008 and requests for oral comments must be submitted by September 11, 2008.

Registration review for the organophosphates will begin in 2008 and 2009. EPA is reviewing each registered pesticide every 15 years to determine whether it still meets the FIFRA standard for registration. In this way, the Agency is ensuring that all registered pesticides do not cause unreasonable risks to human health, workers, or the environment when used as directed on product labeling. The Agency will begin registration review of the organophosphate chlorpyrifos in December 2008.

For additional information and details, see the EPA Federal Register meeting notice published on July 9, 2008, as well as in the public docket under identification number EPA-HQ-OPP-2008-0274.
