Pesticide News Story: EPA Makes Available National Marine Fisheries Service Draft Endangered Species Act Biological Opinions

EPA has received and posted to its Web site a Draft Biological Opinion from the National Marine Fisheries Service that responds to requests for consultation under the Endangered Species Act for three pesticides' potential effects on Pacific salmon and steelhead. EPA initiated consultation for diazinon, malathion, and chlorpyrifos on November 29, 2002, May 29, 2002, and April 14, 2003, respectively.
In addition to posting the Draft to its Web site, EPA has established a public docket [EPA-HQ-OPP-2008-0654] for this and future Draft Biological Opinions related to pesticides and Pacific salmon and steelhead. Once NMFS develops any alternatives or measures it believes are necessary to reduce risk, EPA will request public input on those alternatives and measures. Comments on other aspects of the Draft will be forwarded to NMFS for its consideration.
