Pesticide News Story: Final Risk Assessment for CCA-treated Wood Available

For Release: April 30, 2008

EPA’s “Final Probabilistic Risk Assessment for Children Who Contact Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) Treated Playsets and Decks” is now available.  EPA’s overall conclusions regarding risk for children who come in contact with CCA-treated playsets and decks have not changed.

Although virtually all residential uses of CCA (including use on playsets and decks) were voluntarily canceled effective December 31, 2003, EPA revised the risk assessment to fulfill its previous public commitment and to ensure that any new information did not substantively alter EPA’s original conclusions.  Based on the new information as well as recommendations from the Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) and Science Advisory Board (SAB), EPA does not believe there is any reason to remove or replace CCA-treated structures, including decks and playground equipment, and the Agency is not recommending surrounding soils be removed or replaced.  The final risk assessment is available in the CCA public docket at www.regulations.gov in docket number EPA-HQ-OPP-2003-0250.  Additional information about CCA is available on EPA’s Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) website.
