Pesticide News Story: EPA Hosting Public Meetings on Proposed Revisions to Current Production Regulations Regarding Plant-Incorporated Protectants
For Release: April 27, 2007
EPA is hosting two public meetings during the open comment period for the Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM), entitled Plant-Incorporated Protectants; Potential Revisions to Current Production Regulations (docket ID number EPA-HQ-OPP-2006-1003). The ANPRM announced EPA's intention to develop and propose amendments to existing regulations affecting producers of plant-incorporated protectants (PIPs), a type of pesticide. The Agency is considering amendments to the existing regulations that pertain primarily to producers of “traditional” pesticides, because PIPs are unlike other types of pesticides currently regulated under federal law. PIPs are part of a living organism and potentially can be replicated and produced anywhere a plant containing the PIP grows. EPA will further communicate the regulatory issues described in the ANPRM through the public meetings, and provide opportunity for public dialogue and exchange of information. The meetings will be organized around the issues and questions posed in the ANPRM.
