Pesticide News Story: Now Available: New EPA Guidance on Labeling Revisions Required by the Pesticide Container and Containment Rule

For Release: November 13, 2007

The Agency has issued a Pesticide Registration (PR) Notice that provides guidance to registrants on how to change their labels to comply with the labeling requirements established by the 2006 Final Rule, “Pesticide Management and Disposal; Standards for Pesticide Containers and Containment.” That rule establishes standards for pesticide containers and containment structures and requires certain label language such as: a statement identifying the container as refillable or non-refillable; instructions that facilitate the removal of pesticides from containers before disposing or recycling; and for non-refillable containers, instructions for managing the container. The PR Notice restates the required label statements and allows registrants to make the label changes by notification. By August 17, 2009, all pesticide products distributed or sold must bear labels that comply with the new requirements. The PR Notice entitled: Labeling Revisions Required by the Final Rule “Pesticide Management and Disposal; Standards for Pesticide Containers and Containment,” is available on EPA’s Web site. PR Notices are issued by EPA’s Pesticide Program to inform pesticide registrants and other interested persons about important policies, procedures, and registration related decisions and serve to provide guidance to pesticide registrants and OPP personnel. PR Notices dating back to 1983 are all available at https://www.epa.gov/PR_Notices/.

Please note that the Agency will also be issuing a revised Chapter 13 (Storage and Disposal) to the Label Review Manual to include the language requirements from the container and containment rule. The revised chapter should be available this winter.
