Pesticide News Story: EPA Concludes Special Review of DDVP
For Release: December 21, 2007
EPA has announced its final decision to terminate the Special Review of dichlorvos (DDVP). In a Federal Register Notice published December 19, 2007, the Agency has determined that risk concerns that were the basis for initiating the DDVP Special Review were eliminated or mitigated under the comprehensive pesticide reregistration program so that the Special Review is no longer necessary.
Since 1988, when the Special Review was initiated, additional data have become available and the Agency has changed its assessment of some of the risks associated with DDVP. Accordingly, EPA modified the terms and conditions of DDVP registrations.
During the DDVP reregistration process that concluded in 2006, the Agency conducted an intensive public review through which remaining risk concerns were resolved. In September 2007, the Agency proposed to terminate the DDVP Special Review because the risks that were the basis of this review were no longer of concern. During the public comment process, the Agency did not receive any new information. The Federal Register notice announcing the closing of the DDVP Special Review is available on EPA’s Web site. More information on DDVP is available on the Web site.
EPA can use the pesticide Special Review process when it has reason to believe that the use of a registered pesticide may result in unreasonable adverse effects on people or the environment. The Special Review process usually involves intensive review of one risk or a few potential risks that have raised particular concerns. The Special Review involves evaluating existing data, acquiring new information and/or studies, assessing the identified risk, and determining appropriate risk-reduction measures. More information on the Special Review process is available on EPA’s Web site.
