Pesticide News Story: FIFRA SAP to Review EPA’s Draft Carbofuran Notice of Intent to Cancel

For Release: November 20, 2007

On Tuesday, November 20, 2007, EPA published a Federal Register notice announcing that the FIFRA Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) will meet February 5-8, 2008, to review the Agency’s draft Notice of Intent to Cancel (NOIC) carbofuran. The FR notice solicits panel members for that meeting.

In August 2006, EPA published its Interim Reregistration Eligibility Decision (IRED) document announcing the Agency’s intention to cancel all uses of the pesticide carbofuran due to ecological and occupational risks of concern, as well as dietary risks from residues in food crops and drinking water. Since then, the registrant has submitted and EPA has reviewed additional human and ecological toxicity data, as well as benefits information. None of these new data or new information changed the conclusions that EPA reached in the carbofuran IRED. The Agency, therefore, is initiating the first steps toward cancellation of carbofuran under FIFRA section 6(b). The upcoming SAP meeting is one of the first steps in the pesticide cancellation process.

As additional information about the carbofuran NOIC SAP meeting becomes available, it will be posted on the SAP Web page. Background information, including the carbofuran IRED, is available on the carbofuran reregistration Web page, and in carbofuran docket EPA-HQ-OPP-2005-0162.
