Pesticide News Story: EPA Issues Draft Pesticide Registration Notice For Antimicrobials Intended for Use in HVAC&R Systems

For Release: September 22, 2006

Use of antimicrobial products on or in HVAC&R (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration) systems is significantly different from use of the same products on other hard, non-porous or porous surfaces, and yet, in the past, many products not specifically registered for these systems have been used. EPA has developed draft guidance in the form of a draft Pesticide Registration Notice (PRN) for pesticide manufacturers regarding labeling for EPA-registered sanitizers, disinfectants, and other antimicrobial products. Currently, labels of these products often bear general directions for use on or incorporation within hard, non-porous or porous surfaces, but the products are not specifically registered for HVAC&R systems. The proposed guidance is intended to clarify which antimicrobial products may be used for treatment of those systems. The Agency will be soliciting public comments for 60 days on this proposed guidance, through a Federal Register Notice, which is available on September 22, 2006. The PRN is available on EPA’s pesticide Website. The Agency welcomes comments from all interested parties who have concerns regarding the proper use of pesticide products in HVAC systems or related indoor air quality issues.
