Daniel R. Strongin

Department of Chemistry
Temple University

Professor Strongin received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1988 where he worked with Professor Gabor Somorjai. From 1988 to 1989 he was a postdoctoral associate at the IBM-Almaden Research Center. He began his independent career in 1989 upon joining the Department of Chemistry at SUNY-Stony Brook, where he was a recipient of a National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award and several teaching-based awards. Professor Strongin joined Temple University in 1996 where he currently is a Full Professor. At Stony Brook and Temple he developed a strong interdisciplinary interest in surface science with an emphasis on understanding the chemistry on environmentally relevant surfaces. His scientific interests include understanding the oxidation of sulfide minerals, the sequestration of toxic metals by carbonate minerals, and the use of nanomaterials for the environmental remediation of toxic materials. Strongin's research is currently funded by the Department of Energy-Basic Energy Sciences, National Science Foundation, US Environmental Protection Agency, and the American Chemical Society.
