An Overview of Canadian Nanomedicine Research Funding: The CIHR Vision

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is the major federal agency responsible for funding health research in Canada. Aligned around 13 virtual institutes, CIHR aims to support trans-disciplinary, internationally competitive research, ranging from basic biomedical and clinical research to health systems and services, as well as the factors that affect the health of populations.
The Regenerative Medicine and Nanomedicine initiative is one of three main strategic initiatives of CIHR. Co-led by the Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA) and the Institute of Genetics (IG), it is a true partnership of CIHR Institutes, funding agencies, government, and nongovernmental organizations. The focus of current nanomedicine initiatives at CIHR (including nanotoxicology) will be described, along with an analysis of currently funded nanomedicine projects, broken down by field.
