Improved analytical testing technology has made it possible to detect
trace amounts of pharmaceuticals and other compounds in water at low
concentrations. The Pharmaceutical Research and
Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) is using a science-based approach
to understand and address concerns resulting from detection of pharmaceutical
compounds in the environment. This presentation will summarize the results
of efforts of members of the pharmaceutical industry concerning pharmaceuticals
in the environment and discuss on-going initiatives.
Tools that have been developed to improve the investigation of pharmaceuticals in the environment include the PhATE ® model and ongoing development of a database of English language peer-reviewed publications that report on aquatic life impacts and fate and effects of pharmaceutical compounds. PhRMA also will report use of the PhATE® model to assess the significance of trace amounts of pharmaceuticals in the environment to human health. In addition, PhRMA will report initial findings concerning sources of unused medicines and their disposal.
