Green Lights Project
MED-Duluth completed a “Green Lights” project in February, 1995. The project included upgrading or replacement of approximately 1,500 fluorescent light fixtures with electronic ballasts and energy efficient T-8 lamps. Also, over 50 motion detectors were installed in office areas. The total project contract cost was $133,500 Minnesota Power issued a “Green Lights” grant check for $9,880 upon completion of the project bringing the actual cost to the government to $123,620.
One year after completion of the project, the actual payback is reflected in the reduced electricity consumption. The first year savings is 300,000 kW or about 12%. This is based on the annual average electricity use for the past five years at the facility. The dollar savings was approximately $14,468 based on the current kW cost. Minnesota power, had estimated an annual savings of $13,753 at current rates. Based on this data, the project payback is expected in 8.5 years or less with expected rate increases.
