Woodland Park Savannah Restoration
Portage Dept. of Parks and Recreation
Portage, Indiana

The "Woodland Park Savannah Restoration" project has restored portions of their rare oak savannah habitat to pre-settlement conditions. Efforts are being made in this project to make the site suitable habitat for the Karner Blue Butterfly, which is a federally endangered species.

Wildflower Sanctuary on the Batavia Riverwalk
Batavia Park District and the Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners,
Batavia, Illinois

The "Wildflower Sanctuary on the Batavia Riverwalk" project converted a very degraded site into a native woodland habitat with a lighted brick path running through it. The Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners, a group of volunteers, were essential to the overall success of the project.

Des Plaines Riverbank Restoration Project

The "Des Plaines Riverbank Restoration Project" restored portions of the common areas in the Village of Riverside to pre-settlement conditions through the use of native plants. In addition, a nature trail was installed through restored areas.

Spring Brook Nature Center
Itasca, Illinois

The Spring Brook Nature Center has re-established and improved a number of native ecosystems, including rare savannah and wetland. All school students in Itasca visit the Nature Center 2 to 3 times a year, and a variety of educational programs are offered to the general public and scouts.

William E. Brook Memorial Wetland Sanctuary & Entertainment Center

The "William E. Brook Memorial Wetland Sanctuary & Entertainment Center" is a restored wetland area, that was a previous dump site. It has become an excellent educational wetland sanctuary.

Peck Farm Park

Geneva, Illinois

"Peck Farm Park" is a 378-acre natural area and open green space located in a rapidly developing suburban community. The restoration of over 120 acres of agricultural land into tall grass prairie, wetlands, lake, fen and woodlands provides critical habitat for a wide variety of native plants, birds and animals.

Twin Lakes Woods

Westmont Illinois

The "Twin Lake Woods" project involved the clean-up of tons of garbage, the planting of an oak savanna, Twin Lakes Pond restoration and improvement of St. Joseph’s Creek. Much of the project work has been performed by volunteers (students, scouts and adults).

Prairie Park

Elburn, Illinois

The "Prairie Park" project has created a beautiful, natural area in the new public park, which provides habitat for a variety of birds.
