Project Name: Storm Water Conservation Project
Location: Theodore, Alabama
Category: Business

The Theodore plant has a series of three initial storm water collection and treatment basins and two final settling basins. Storm water ditches are strategically located at the site to quickly collect the storm water run-off for conveyance to the three initial basins for treatment. These concrete lined ditches make up the collection system that feeds the east and west initial settling basins. All the storm water ditches are sloped to convey water from south to north. The ditches that surround the plant also act as barriers, preventing water from leaving the site and contaminating the adjacent wetlands and the Theodore Industrial Canal. In 1999, a storm-water management program was initiated to eliminate storm water discharges into the Theodore Industrial Canal. At that time, the plant started utilizing the collected storm water as cooling/conditioning water in its production process. To illustrate, in 1998, 88 million gallons of water were discharged to the Theodore Industrial Canal; whereas in 2006, no discharges were made at all. This means 100% of the collected storm water from the plant site was utilized as process conditioning water rather than being discharged to the Theodore Industrial Canal.
