The Gulf of Mexico Program recently announced that the West Florida Regional Planning Council/Bay area Resource Council of Pensacola, Florida will receive a first place Gulf Guardian Award for 2005 in the Youth/Education Category for the “Resource Rangers Environmental Club”.

The Environmental Education Coordination Team began the Resource Ranger program in 2001 to provide environmental education in area schools. This curriculum based program for elementary and middle school students addresses several environmental topics with the common thread of improving water quality. No coordinated effort had existed between Escambia and Santa Rosa counties in Northwest Florida, and this group of volunteer environmental professionals formulated a plan for classroom visits, beach ecology field trips, and a series of 30 minute videos for grades 4-8. Each video includes corresponding curriculum and hands-on activities to be used as follow- up. The group secured seed money from the Florida Coastal Management Program and has leveraged that funding with grants and local contributions from business and industry, local agencies and organizations to continue the program. Feedback from teachers, parents, and participating students has consistently indicated that the program is making a difference in attitudes about the environment.
