The Gulf of Mexico Program recently announced that the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve will receive a third place Gulf Guardian Award for 2005 in the Partnerships Category for “Grand Bay Bioblitz.”

The Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve’s first annual “Grand Bay Bioblitz” was held between April 29 and May 1, 2004 at the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve/National Wildlife Refuge, along with a multitude of other important partners, including MA-AL Sea Grant, Mississippi Power, Chevron Refinery , NOAA and USFWS. The “Grand Bay Bioblitz” was a 24-hour marathon inventory of the plant and animal species found within the reserve and refuge which is located in southeast Jackson County, Mississippi. This inventory process was integrated with educational activities throughout the event in order to promote the importance of maintaining biodiversity within our coastal habitats. Students, parents, teachers and community members were engaged in many hands-on activities and were allowed to interact with the researchers during the 24 hour event. This event helped to establish a baseline of species and environmental information for the reserve. Additionally, it helped to instill a “sense of place” for the reserve within the community.
