The Gulf of Mexico Program recently announced that Dawn Rebarchik of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs, Mississippi will receive a second place Gulf Guardian Award for 2005 in the Individual Category.
Ms Rebarchik has been in charge of the microbiology laboratory at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory since 1993. She has managed the Beach Monitoring Program, which provides public health data regarding fecal indicator bacteria in coastal bathing waters to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, and the Shellfish Monitoring Program, which provides public health data regarding fecal indicator bacteria in oyster harvest waters to the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources. Ms Rebarchik has spent countless hours of her own personal time to test bathing beaches and oyster harvest waters. She has done this to keep swimming areas and oyster harvest areas open, while protecting public health. She has helped to promote tourism and economic development in Mississippi without jeopardizing the health of swimmers and other recreational users of coastal waters and of consumers of oysters. Because of her tireless efforts, the beaches of Mississippi have become safer for users and oysters are a high quality, safe product in the market place.
