The Gulf of Mexico Program recently announced that the City of Clearwater will receive a third place Gulf Guardian Award for 2005 in the Government Category for “Cooper’s Point Management Project.”
The Cooper’s Point Habitat Restoration Project was initiated in 1996 by the City of Clearwater and was not required by state or federal mandate or permit requirement. The project received funding from several agencies including the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Pinellas County, the Tampa Bay Estuary Program, Keep Pinellas Beautiful and several local schools provided support for additional planting efforts and maintaining the site. The Cooper’s Point property is a 75 acre peninsula located on the west end of the Courtney Campbell Parkway in Old Tampa Bay. The property was purchased by the City of Clearwater and Pinellas County in order to preserve the site for wildlife habitat and to prevent residential development of the site. The project entailed exotic and invasive species removal and control, the creation of inlet channels, re-planting of native species, and the construction of vehicle bridges to improve accessibility.
