Gulf Guardian Award Winners 2005
Government Category - 2nd Place
-The Gulf of Mexico Program recently announced that the Southwest Florida Water Management District will receive a second place Gulf Guardian Award for 2005 in the Government Category for “Water C.H.A.M.P. ”
The Southwest Florida Water Management District began its Water Conservation Hotel and Motel Program “CH.A.M.P.” in 2002. The purpose of the program is to educate hotel/motel owners, management and staff, as well as their guests on the importance of water conservation. Due to the critical water issues facing their respective basins, the District approved a hotel/motel water conservation program for Pinellas, Hillsborough and southwestern Pasco counties. Water C.H.A.M.P. consists of a linens and towels reuse program, an environmental self-audit checklist, staff training video, guest comment cards, staff workshops, water use audits of select participants and a professional program evaluation. The goal of this program is to impact hotels and motels in this area with water conservation education resulting in water savings.
