The Gulf of Mexico Program recently announced that Sunny Beaches of Corpus Christi, Texas will receive a second place Gulf Guardian Award for 2005 in the Civic/Nonprofit Organization Category for the “Sunny Beaches’ New Frontier”.
Sunny Beaches is a Texas nonprofit 501 (c)(3) corporation formed to clean up the beaches in Kenedy, Kleberg, and Nueces counties, Texas, while offering local residents an opportunity to participate and earn community service credit. James H. Davis, President and Founder, funded the startup of Sunny Beaches, and Judge Joe A. Gonzalez of Nueces County provided the workforce by assigning his court’s truancy offenders to Sunny Beaches to make restitution. Since January 10th, 2004, Sunny Beaches has been taking teams of 10-23 workers by van to Padre Island every other weekend to clean up the beach and maintain its pristine beauty and valuable habitat.
