The Gulf of Mexico Program recently announced that the Mississippi Power, Pinebelt Division of Picayune, MS will receive a third place Gulf Guardian Award for 2005 in the Business Category for “The Okatoma Float/Trash Pick-up”.
The Pinebelt Environmental Committee of Mississippi Power Company is a clean stream sponsor of the Okatoma River. As responsible stewards of recreation areas, water quality and scenic areas and streams, 80 to 100 employees of the Pinebelt Division gather annually to make a clean sweep of the Okatoma River. Several of the Mississippi Power Company employees are certified to test for water quality at this same location and report their results to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. On July 17, 2004, approximately 90 Mississippi Power employees and their friends collected around 400 lbs of garbage in the 3 hour float. Through the manpower and dedication of these employees, the area from Seminary to Lux, MS was clean to family boaters, aquatic life, plants and animals.
