The Gulf of Mexico Program recently announced that Florikan, a manufacturer of Environmentally Sustainable Agricultural (ESA) products in Sarasota, Florida, will receive a second place Gulf Guardian Award for 2005 in the Business Category for “Staged Nutrient Release Fertilizer”.
Florikan is a family owned business founded in 1982. With the development of Florikan Staged Nutrient Release in 2000, professional plant growers could now plan fertility by precisely releasing specific nutrients at different speeds coinciding with the specific physiological needs of the plant at different times. With the Staged Nutrient Release product, nutrient requirements for an entire 12 month growing cycle could be achieved with a single application, replacing multiple applications of conventional fertilizer. The reduction of fertilizer inputs reduces the potential for excess nitrogen or phosphate run off into the environment. Developed in 2000, the SNR technology is based on the blending and coating of water soluble substrates, to release at different times over the crop cycle in tune with the needs of the plant. This technology provides the wholesale horticultural grower, a solution to produce plants efficiently while reducing labor costs, and minimizing fertilizer runoff.
