The Gulf of Mexico Program recently announced that Mississippi Power Company, Plant Jack Watson of Gulfport, Mississippi, will receive a first place Gulf Guardian Award for 2005 in the Business Category for “Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day”.

Mississippi Power continues to demonstrate its commitment in helping protect the environment by hosting for the last ten years a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day at Plant Jack Watson. The event is hosted by Mississippi Power and sponsored by the Harrison County Beautification Commission, Harrison County Wastewater and the MS Department of Marine Resources. This effort consists of help from local businesses, industry, county, state and other volunteers. In 2004, they raised the bar by adding Electronic Waste as a new waste stream, and collected 13,000 lbs. of electronic waste for recycling. Mississippi Power made many contributions to the event including volunteers, work supplies, food, shirts and the collection facility. This event was initiated to improve the quality of the local environment, while allowing residents a safe and convenient way to easily dispose of hazardous waste.
