Coastal Roots is a coastal restoration/nursery program designed in 2001 by Dr. Pam Blanchard (LSU Dept. of Curriculum and Instruction) and Dr. Ed Bush (LSU Dept. of Horticulture). Rachel Somers (Sea Grant) and David Bourgeois (Lafourche-Terrebonne Parishes) are in charge of nurseries set-up, maintenance and planting assistance. Dr. Sophie Warny (Sea Grant Education) coordinates the project. CR’s primary goals are to help restore critical Gulf of Mexico coastal habitats, help students develop a sense of stewardship towards wetlands restoration, and to inform the public of coastal restoration needs. Currently, the program includes 15 schools in 11 south Louisiana parishes.
