Kay Dantin has been instrumental in leading and sustaining an annual, Chevron sponsored, beach cleanup program at Fourchon Beach that is a model in organization, environmental education and natural resource appreciation. Fourchon Beach is an undeveloped 12 mile stretch of Gulf-faced, sandy shoreline in lower Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, buffeted by low-lying dunes and extensive wetlands, marshes, and small bays. Accessible by one unpaved shell road, this beach has been a popular recreation destination for southeast Louisiana locals interested in fishing, crabbing, camping, swimming, and birding. Like most unmaintained south Louisiana shorelines, debris, litter, and trask from beach and Gulf users is a chronic problem. Chevron has participated in, and supported coastal cleanups from Louisiana to Florida over the past 12 years. Kay’s outstanding leadership and commitment, along with a cadre of her fellow empoloyees from the Leeville Operations’ Base, their families, and business associates have been able to maintain the interest and participation of hundreds of impressionable volunteers from Lafourche Parish High Schools at the on-going annual Fourchon Beach cleanup. Besides successfully cleaning several miles of Fourchon beach each year, she assures that volunteers conscientiously record usable data for the national marine debris data base which she submits through the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality to the Center for Marine Conservation. Without concerned and capable people with a personal appreciation for the multiple use value of the Gulf of Mexico, there would no longer be hundreds of volunteers participating each year, and future generations of Lafourche citizens may again resort to taking a quality marine and coastal environment for granted.
