The Florida Aquarium Stormwater Research/Demonstration Site was conceptualized in 1993 and put in place in 1996. The project is a partnership between the Southwest Florida Water Management District and The Florida Aquarium, Inc., designed to determine the effectiveness of using a non-traditional parking lot design and materials as a method to reduce nonpoint source pollution. The principal investigator, Betty Rushton, Environmental Scientist 4, conducts on-going research, funded in part by the Environmental Protection Agency, at the Florida Aquarium site, adjacent to Ybor Channel in downtown Tampa, Florida. Ybor Channel flows into Tampa Bay and, ultimately, to the Gulf of Mexico.
