TIE FOR SECOND PLACE BUSINESS

Project #: PH 2000-04
Company: Texaco Refining and Marketing, Inc., New Orleans LA
Project Name: Used Oil Recycling Initiative
Category: Business
Project Type: Public Health

Texaco Refining and Marketing Inc. (TRMI) started the Used Oil Recycling Project at its Marrero, Louisiana facility in 1994. It was started as a means to ensure Texaco's customers had an environmentally friendly way to dispose of used lubricants. This project has involved collection and purchasing of used motor oil at various locations from Texas to Alabama to Illinois; including from "Do-It-Yourselfer's" (DIY), cleaning and processing this used motor oil, and marketing the reprocessed oil as a marine fuel or as refinery feed stock.

This project was initiated at TRMI's facility in Marrero, Louisiana in 1994. It uses a Company designed and patented "Trailblazer" process to clean and process used motor oil into a marine fuel or refinery feed stock.

In 1999 alone, 32 million gallons of used oil was processed, approximately 26,000 gallons from DIY drop-off. This volume has been fairly consistent since 1997. Between 1994 and 1997, lesser volumes were processed because Texaco was still doing research and development on the process.

TRMI also purchases used oil for this project from third party collectors from Alabama to Texas and up the Mississippi River to Chicago, Illinois.
