Case Studies

An interview (PDF) (22 pp, 1.1MB) with Judy Pratt-Shelly, Treaty/Natural Resources Division Chief and Executive Environmental Programs Director, and her mother, Grace Deragon, provides insight into one tribe's waste management history and efforts to curb backyard burning. The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa implemented a Burn Barrel Incentive Program to reduce backyard burning and promote use of the tribe's transfer station.

EPA's Waste Management in Indian Country website provides numerous case studies of individual tribes' solid waste programs and other tribal solid waste related information.
