(Dallas, Texas – October 3, 2007) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded an El Paso organization $50,000 to improve public health and the environment in colonia communities. The Border Fair Housing and Economic Justice Center was one of 20 organizations from across the country to receive the grants, which were created to assist communities in developing strategic solutions to environmental justice issues and in improving community health and sustainability.

The Border Fair Housing and Economic Justice Center will use the grant to achieve several goals through their Colonias Sanas (Healthy Colonias) Initiative, including reducing water pollution, increasing access to safe drinking water, improving air quality, and promoting proper solid waste disposal in El Paso-area colonias.
