PHILADELPHIA - The Environmental Protection Agency, in cooperation with the Canaan Valley Institute, the Friends of the Cheat, and the Tygart Valley River Watershed Development and Preservation Alliance, will hold two informational workshops on the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) process.

The workshops are designed to explain in detail what TMDLs are, how the models are developed, and why citizens are an important part of the process.

Everyone interested in these watersheds is encouraged to attend.  The workshop for the Cheat River is scheduled Jan. 25, 1999 at the Kingwood Community Center, and the workshop for the Tygart River is  Jan. 26, 1999 at the Philippi City Hall.  The informational sessions will last 6:30 until 9 p.m.

TMDL is a new way of measuring the total amount of pollutant in a river or lake, as opposed to sampling individual outfalls from factory pipes.

The TMDL process is twofold:

First, to develop a model which identifies all the possible sources of pollution in a watershed and what each of these sources contributes.

Second, to propose a number of different ways to control these sources.

The goal of the TMDL process is to restore the health of the watershed in order that everyone may benefit from having fishable and swimmable waters.
