CHLORINE GAS APPLICATIONS RESTRICTED

On September 18, EPA proposed additional measures to restrict the use of chlorine gas. This proposal would allow only certified and trained applicators to use chlorine gas in residential pool treatment and water and sewage treatment applications. EPA is taking this action because of serious accidents and fatalities among applicators from using this acutely toxic pesticide. This action builds on the Agency's February 1999 announcement for chlorine gas, which restricted the majority of uses to trained and certified applicators. After considering comments from several trade groups, state governments, universities and individuals, EPA decided to propose that the restricted use classification should apply to all antimicrobial uses of chlorine gas. This action would not affect home owner treatment of swimming pools which typically involve the use of chlorine tablets rather than chlorine gas. The Agency is inviting public comment on the revised chlorine gas decision for 60 days and comments must be received by November 15. The Federal Register notice on chlorine gas was published on Sept. 18, and is at: https://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr.
