FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY, AUGUST 5, 1999
EPA STREAMLINES PROCESS FOR COMMUNITIES APPLYING
FOR SUPERFUND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE GRANTS

Changes to the Superfund Technical Assistance Grants (TAG) program proposed this week would make the application process easier and the management requirements simpler. The Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 made grants available to any group of individuals that may be affected by a release or threatened release at any facility that is listed on the National Priorities List. Based on feedback from TAG recipients EPA is proposing changes that reduce burdensome requirements. The changes would reduce the requirements for receiving a waiver for the 20-percent matching-funds requirement and allow for longer funding periods based on site specific needs. In addition these changes allow for the hiring of advisors with expertise in relocation, redevelopment and health issues. The proposed rule is expected to be published in the Federal Register soon. Copies of the rule will be available via EPA’s web page at https://www.epa.gov/superfund under "what’s new." Copies also are available through the Superfund hotline at 1-800-424-9346 or 703-412-9810.
