PHILADELPHIA – The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $433,700 grant to the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Derry, Westmoreland County, Pa. to upgrade its water treatment plant.

“With completion of the project, the municipal authority will be able to assure a continuous supply of safe and affordable drinking water to the 6,400 residents it serves. Overall water quality and dependability will be improved,” said Donald S. Welsh, administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The project includes upgrading the water filtration and treatment process, the monitoring and control system and installing a new standby generator that will allow the plant to function during power failures. Some funding will also help pay for renovation to the office and garage area.

The grant will pay for 55 percent of the project, and the authority will pay for the balance.
