EXECUTIVE PLEADS GUILTY IN SLUDGE CASE

Robert Douglas of Littleton, Colo., former acquisitions director and environmental compliance director of BFI Services Group, a Browning-Ferris Industries subsidiary, pleaded guilty on September 5 to violating the Clean Water Act in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The charges resulted from the improper disposal of millions of gallons of mixed raw sewage, grease and concentrated treated wastewater sludge, which was sent to wastewater treatment plants after it had been falsely identified as diluted raw sewage. When sentenced, Douglas faces a maximum of up to five years imprisonment and/or a maximum fine of $250,000. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division
and the FBI.
