NEWS ADVISORY
(Kansas City, Kan., July 21, 2006) – A public meeting will be held Tuesday to enhance understanding of a proposed EPA rule to control effluent from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), such as large pig, veal, poultry, beef and dairy farms.

EPA experts will give a presentation and answer questions on the proposed rule, under which CAFOs would continue to be required to properly manage the manure they generate. EPA proposed the rule June 22, 2006. Comments are due for this proposed rule by August 14, 2006.

What: CAFO Proposed Rule Public Meeting

When: Tuesday, July 25 from 9 a.m. to noon

Where: Scheman Conference Center, Iowa State Center, Ames, Iowa
    (For directions, visit: www.center.iastate.edu/directions.asp)

Please note: The meeting time has been changed from the time given in the public meetings federal register July 3 (1 to 4 p.m.). Also, this public meeting is not a mechanism for submitting formal comments on the proposal.

This proposal, in response to a 2005 court ruling, would revise the current permit system for CAFOs. The proposed rule revises the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting requirements and Effluent Limitations Guidelines and Standards for CAFOs.

For more information, visit EPA’s Proposed Revisions to CAFO NPDES Rule Web site (epa.gov/npdes/afo/revisedrule), where you can download the presentation that will be given at the public meeting.
