The President’s Council on Food Safety to Hold Public Meeting in Dallas

    The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services have scheduled a public meeting next week in Dallas to obtain comments regarding strategies to protect our nation's food supply.

     The United States has the best food supply system in the world. However, a recent National Academy of Sciences report recommended several ways to enhance the safety of our nation's food and to better coordinate the activities of several federal agencies which regulate the food industry. The report, "Ensuring Safe Food from Production to Consumption," can be found on the Internet at http://www.nas.edu.

     In August 1998, President Clinton created the President's Council on Food Safety to develop a comprehensive Federal food safety program.  The program will regulate food handling from the farm to the table and will affect everyone.

     At meetings throughout the country, the Council is seeking input from individuals, citizens groups, businesses and state and tribal governments so that all concerns can be examined as federal agencies work to create this far-reaching program.
