TWO MINNESOTA MEN NAMED IN INDICTMENT

Meherban Roshanravan of Coppell, Texas, former vice-president for environmental matters at Darling International Inc., in Houston, Texas, and Timothy Guzek now of De Pere, Wis., former general manager of Darling International's Blue Earth Rendering Plant in Blue Earth, Minn., were named in a superseding indictment in U.S. District Court in St. Paul, Minn., on May 7. Both men were charged with one count that alleges a conspiracy that involved discharging ammonia into the Blue Earth River, making false statements, tampering with water monitoring and defrauding the federal government. They were also charged with the following alleged violations of the Clean Water Act: five counts of illegal wastewater discharges; nine counts of diluting wastewater samples; five counts of submitting false discharge monitoring reports to the state of Minnesota; and one count of making a false statement in a letter to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. If convicted, Roshanravan and Guzek each face a maximum sentence of up to five years imprisonment on the conspiracy count, and a maximum of three years in prison on each of the Clean Water Act counts, except for the nine counts involving the dilution of wastewater samples and the count involving the false statement which carry a two year maximum penalty. Each man also faces a maximum fine of up to $250,000 on each count. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
