EPA REGION 7 ANNOUNCES IOWA GRANT RECIPIENTS OF AGING INITIATIVES

EPA has awarded two Aging Initiative grants to better protect the health of older adults. A grant of $25,000 was awarded to the Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and $24,917 to Keokuk County Extension Service in Keokuk, Iowa.

“These grants are part of EPA’s effort to protect the health of older people, who may be more susceptible to environmental hazards,” EPA Region 7 Administrator James Gulliford said.

The grants total $492,180 nationally. The Aging Initiative encourages civic organizations and individuals to recognize and reduce environmental hazards in their communities.

The $25,000 grant to the Kirkwood Community College will support a project to cultivate awareness among health care workers, older adults and family caregivers. The project targets an at-risk population, frail older adults living independently in the community who will benefit from cleaner air, water and a home environment.

The Keokuk grant will support teaching youth and senior adults about pollution, with special emphasis on water pollution and quality. The program incorporates senior adults throughout the curriculum who learn, and teach children, about pollution and methods of prevention and control.
