Denver -- Continuing its commitment to increase understanding of the importance of protecting the environment, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) funded an environmental education project at the SD Discovery Center and Aquarium. The $4,750 grant will used for four Wetlands II workshops at the state's Game, Fish and Parks outdoor education facilities.

Teachers participating will gain ecology and biology knowledge related to wetlands habitats. They will also complete hands-on lessons from the Project Water Education for Teacher (WET)/Wonders of Wetlands curriculum guides.

"Our grants support projects that enhance public awareness, knowledge and skills, so people can make informed decisions that affect environmental quality," Acting Regional Administrator Jack McGraw said, "This kind of hands-on project involves students of all ages and promotes the understanding that we are inextricably connected to and dependent on the environment."

Since 1992, EPA has awarded $20 million in grants. For more information on EPA's Environmental Education Grant program, visit https://www.epa.gov/enviroed/grants.html.
