EPA Creates New Environmental Research & Training Fellowships

In order to better prepare promising scientists for careers in environmental science, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will sponsor up to four research fellowships per year for three years. Applications for these fellowships will be available in January 2003.

During the first year of the program, research fellows will work directly with scientists and engineers at the Atlantic Ecology Division (AED) in Narragansett, Rhode Island, an EPA research facility which is part of the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory. In future years, the program may be expanded to include opportunities at other EPA ORD ecological laboratories.

The program will be cooperatively administered by a consortium of academic institutions, including the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, the University of Southern Maine, University of Rhode Island, Rutgers University, and two historically black colleges and universities – the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore and the Delaware State University.

“This new program extends the existing summer student research program to allow more substantial interactions between students and EPA scientists, and builds upon AED’s strong history of supporting marine environmental research in New England and the mid-Atlantic,” said Ronald Landy, mid-Atlantic ORD regional scientist.

The focus of this program is to increase the diversity of students participating in aquatic environmental and ecological sciences. This research and training program is open to undergraduate and graduate students at the consortium institutions as well as students from other institutions with environmental sciences and ecology programs.

Undergraduate and graduate students from colleges and universities with environmental science or ecology programs are eligible to apply. Candidates will be selected by March and the fellowships will begin in May 2003.

Participation will reinforce knowledge gained in the classroom and laboratory, provide the work experience necessary to compete for employment and post-doctoral opportunities, and produce scientists trained in appropriate environmental research fields relevant to EPA’s ecological mission
