Outdoor Burn Ban Update for Select Pacific Northwest Indian Reservations

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 10 has updated burn ban information for several Indian Reservations until further notice. The ban was declared last week due to deteriorating air quality conditions in conjunction with stagnant air conditions.

The burn ban applies to all outdoor, agricultural, and forestry burning, including camping and recreational fires within reservation boundaries. Ceremonial and traditional fires are exempt from the outdoor burn ban.

A burn ban will remain in effect for the Indian Reservations listed below. Air quality conditions are expected to improve over the weekend, initially west of the Cascades, and later east of the Cascades. EPA will update this burn ban notice on Monday December 19, 2005.

The burn ban applies to the following Indian Reservations:

Idaho None

Oregon Cow Creek Klamath Umatilla Warm Springs

Washington Muckleshoot Nisqually Puyallup Skokomish Snohomish Squaxin Island Tulalip Yakama

EPA also requests that you reduce all sources of air pollution, including excess driving, vehicle idling and the use of woodstoves and fireplaces. Air pollution can have significant health impacts. Cooperation from the community will help people who are at risk during this period. Those most at risk are the young, the elderly and those with respiratory, cardiac or pulmonary diseases. Those at risk should avoid outdoor exercise and minimize exposure to outdoor pollution as much as possible.
