EPA to Hold Public Meeting Regarding Triangle Pacific Site, Elizabeth City, NC

(ATLANTA – Sept. 20, 2011) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 regarding the Triangle Pacific Site in Elizabeth City, NC. The public meeting will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Pasquotank-Camden Library, 100 East Colonial Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC.

EPA, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NC DENR) and Environmental Consultant, O’Brien & Gere, will provide information about the environmental investigation that will take place at the Triangle Pacific Superfund site.

The Triangle Pacific site occupies approximately 188 acres in area at 1268 Toxey Road (now 190 TCOM Drive). Originally, the site was operated by the U.S. Navy in 1943 as a dirigible (lighter-than-air craft or “blimp”) base known as Weeksville Naval Air Facility. The facility was then operated by Westinghouse in 1964, a manufacturer of kitchen and bathroom cabinets. The facility was later sold to TCOM in 1977. Triangle Pacific purchased the property from Westinghouse in 1977 and continued with cabinet manufacturing until 1996 at which time the property including the site was sold to TCOM. Currently, TCOM manufactures and tests dirigibles at the site.
