EPA COMPLETES HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE REMOVAL AT THE CAROLINA STEEL DRUM SITE IN ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA

The United States Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it has completed a hazardous substance removal at the Carolina Steel Drum Site in Rock Hill, York County, South Carolina. A removal is a short term cleanup intended to clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or to the environment. The removal was completed under the authority and direction of the Agency’s Emergency Response and Removal Branch.

The removal included sample collection for disposal analysis; excavation and transportation of approximately 51,000 tons of incinerator ash and other buried drums and debris; onsite treatment of pesticide contaminated soils; water treatment; recycling and/or disposal of other debris or wastes and site restoration activities.

The Carolina Steel Drum Corporation, located off Hawkfield Road, is a former drum reclamation/reconditioning facility. In addition, the facility incinerated residues obtained from the drums.

The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA, also known as Superfund) and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) authorize EPA to respond to actual or threatened releases of hazardous substances that may endanger public health, welfare or the environment.
