ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE 1997 SMALL GRANTS PROGRAM AWARDED

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announces the award of $2.7 million to assist 139 community based-organizations, tribal governments, academic institutions, and state/local governments to address environmental justice issues and concerns in their communities. This is the fourth year the Agency has provided financial assistance to eligible community organizations under the Small Grants Program. In FY 94, the Agency awarded $500,000 to 61 recipients; in FY 95 and 96, the Agency awarded $3.0 million each year to 170 and 156 award recipients respectively. In FY 98, the Environmental Justice Small Grants Program will award $2.5 million. The Request for Application (RFA) will be available in early December and can be obtained by calling the hotline at 1-800-962-6215. The Environmental Justice Small Grants projects continue to address environmental and human health issues including lead poisoning, ground water and surface water contamination, childhood asthma and environmental impacts from mining operations.
