PALMERTON, Pa. – Property owners in the Palmerton and Lower Towamensing Township area that have received soil sampling access requests from Cummings/Riter Consultants, Inc. on behalf of Viacom International, Inc. and Horshead Industries, Inc., are encouraged to respond before the October 15, 2002 deadline.

The Environmental Protection Agency would like to thank the over 700 property owners who have already responded.

The responses are the next step towards bringing a conclusion to the Palmerton Zinc Superfund Site, Operable Unit #3, Community Soils portion of the site.

The soil sampling will be performed free of charge to help determine the extent of lead contamination that may be present in residential soils. If lead is found to exceed safe limits, clean up actions will be offered with the property owners permission, again free of charge. This first phase of soil sampling access requests encompasses over 1600 homes.

The balance of the residential properties will be solicited in the Spring of 2003. If you have any questions, please call the Joint Palmerton Superfund Project Office, 610-824-7247 or drop by at 125 Delaware Avenue between 9:00 a.m and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
