(Boston—January 23, 2012) The Manchester, New Hampshire Wastewater Treatment Plant was recently honored by EPA with a 2011 Regional Industrial Pretreatment Program Excellence Award.

The EPA Regional Wastewater Excellence Awards Program was established to recognize and honor the employees of publicly owned wastewater treatment plants for their commitment to improving water quality with outstanding plant operations and maintenance.    More often than not, and particularly with the smaller facilities, conscientious operators and staff continue to perform exceptionally with limited resources.   Acknowledging the outstanding industrial pretreatment oversight and work by municipal wastewater treatment plant personnel is one of the award categories.

The Pretreatment staff of the Manchester Wastewater Treatment Plant, led by Chris Crowley, Industrial Pretreatment Coordinator, was recognized by EPA's New England Office for exceptional work in its oversight of its industrial users discharging to the municipal sewer system.  The Manchester Pretreatment Program staff also includes Mike Kilrain, Pretreatment Inspector and Robert Robinson, Environmental Permits Coordinator.

The Manchester Industrial Pretreatment Program has developed a very effective Dental Amalgam program and is conducting bi-annual inspection of dental offices.   The City continues to provide extremely efficient oversight of industrial users by performing exemplary inspections and documentation of industrial activities.   The City has exceeded federal pretreatment program requirements and has taken an innovative approach to inspection and monitoring activities.

“The professionals operating these wastewater treatment plants, as well as the municipalities and the state environmental agencies that support them, are essential to keeping our environment healthy by protecting water quality. I am proud to give them the credit they deserve,” said Curt Spalding, regional administrator of EPA's New England Office.

The Manchester, New Hampshire Wastewater Treatment Plant’s Industrial Pretreatment Program will be acknowledged for its exceptional work on January 25th at the annual New England Water Environment Association Conference in Boston.
