EPA provides grant to improve Roaring Brook Township sewer system

MOSCOW, Pa. --The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $285,060 grant to Roaring Brook Township Sewer Authority to help correct water pollution problems caused by the Township’s existing sewer system.

The funds will be used to repair broken and cracked portions of the sewer system to eliminate groundwater and storm water from seeping into the sewer system.

“Old, inadequate sewer systems are a major cause of water pollution problems in many cities nationwide. The EPA and state governments believe that improving sewer systems is a major component of improving water quality, and this grant to the Roaring Brook Township Sewer Authority is an important first step,” said Bradley Campbell, administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

During wet weather, groundwater and storm water have been seeping into the sewer system causing excessive overloads at the Elmhust Sewage Treatment Facility. The funds will help Roaring Brook Township remove the excessive flows from its sewer system, which will reduce the wet weather flows to the Elmhurst plant.

The grant will pay for 55 percent of the $518,300 project, and the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority will provide a loan for the remaining costs.
