Denver -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will hold a public meeting at 7:00 p.m., on May 2nd ,at the Holiday Inn Express in Deadwood, to discuss EPA’s proposals for cleaning up the Ruby Waste Rock Pile at the Gilt Edge Mine site located near Deadwood. EPA will present its preferred alternative for cleanup along with the other options it considered. A summary of the groundwater investigations at the site will also be given by Dr. Helen Dawson, EPA hydrogeologist.

The Ruby Waste Rock Pile is made of spent ores and leach pad materials from past mining and is a source for sulfide and metal contamination to Bear Butte Creek. EPA’s approach to remediate this pile is to regrade it, cap it with a synthetic material and surplus rock from the nearby Highway 385 improvement project, and construct a drainage system to control erosion and runoff. Isolating and containing this waste pile will significantly reduce the threat of acid rock drainage to Ruby Gulch and Bear Butte Creek.

Although this is the preferred alternative at the present time, EPA and DENR welcome the public’s comment on all the alternatives presented. EPA and DENR will choose the final remedy after the comment period ends and may select any one of the options after taking public comments into account.

Oral comments may be delivered at the public meeting. Written comments may be sent to: Ken Wangerud, Project Manager, EPA Region 8, 999 18th St., Ste 300, Denver, CO 80202. Copies of the Proposed Plan and documents supporting the proposal may be read at the Phoebe Hearst Library, 315 W. Main Street, Lead, SD or at the EPA Superfund Records Center, 999 18th Street, 5th Floor, Denver, CO phone: 1-800-277-8917 ext 6473. The comment period ends on May 28th.
