FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 1998
EPA SPONSORS TRAINING FOR INDUSTRIES REPORTING POLLUTION UNDER TOXIC RELEASE INVENTORY PROGRAM

During the next four months, EPA is sponsoring a series of workshops designed to help businesses meet their reporting requirements under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) and the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA). These workshops are provided on an annual basis to assist the regulated community in preparing reports that are included in the publicly-accessible Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) database. In addition to basic training, the workshops will include industry-specific training modules for seven new industry sectors that are required to begin reporting their environmental releases and other waste management activities. These industries include: metal mining, coal mining, electricity generation, hazardous waste treatment, solvent recovery, chemical and allied products wholesale, and petroleum bulk terminals and stations wholesale. These industries and 20 manufacturing sectors are covered under EPCRA if they operate facilities that manufacture, process or use large quantities of one or more of the toxic chemicals listed under section 313 of the law. Under EPCRA and PPA businesses are required to report to EPA their releases of these chemicals into the air, water or soil. The workshops will include a variety of hands-on exercises using actual forms and associated guidance materials to help participants understand the reporting process. Individuals that will most benefit by the course are industry and federal facility staff responsible for completing their company’s TRI forms, and consultants who may be assisting them. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis. To register for one of these workshops, contact the EPCRA/TRI Training Registration Line, E-mail: cjones@tascon.com, Telephone: (301) 907-3844, ext. 260, Fax: (301) 907-9655.
