Denver -- The Environmental Protection Agency today announced the 26th annual Miles Per Gallon rankings for passenger vehicles. The fuel economy estimates for the 2001 model year vehicles rank the Honda Insight as the most fuel efficient car at 61 miles per gallon (mpg) for city driving and 68 mpg on the highway. The Ferrari 550 Maranello has the lowest fuel economy rating of all vehicles with a city rating at 8 mpg and 13 mpg highway.

"These rankings can help every consumer make more informed decisions when purchasing a new vehicle," said EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner. "Choosing the most fuel-efficient vehicle in a class can save the owner at least $1500 in fuel costs, avoid tons of the pollution that causes global warming and help reduce dependence on imported oil."

For the second year in a row, advanced hybrid technology vehicles rank the best in fuel efficiency. The leader, Honda Insight, is an electric hybrid vehicle, as is the second-ranking Toyota Prius (at 52 mpg city and 45 mpg highway). Advanced hybrid technology includes the combination of a small gasoline engine and a self-charging electric motor/generator.

Other fuel efficient vehicles in various class sizes include the Honda Accord and Mazda 626 midsize sedans; Ford Focus midsize station wagon; the Oldsmobile Silhouette, Chevrolet Venture and Pontiac Montana minivans; the Toyota RAV4 sport utility vehicle; and the Chevrolet S10, GMC Sonoma and Isuzu Hombre pickup trucks. Mileages for these vehicles range from 28 mpg city/36 mpg highway to 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway.

Detailed information on vehicle fuel economy, including a downloadable version of the Fuel Economy Guide can be found at www.fueleconomy.gov, a website maintained jointly by EPA and the Department of Energy. The web site allows users to compare side-by-side fuel economy, greenhouse gas emissions and estimated annual fuel costs. The site includes fuel economy information going back as far as 1985, which can be useful for buyers of used cars. The printed version of the 2001 Fuel Economy Guide will be available at car dealerships, public libraries and credit unions later this fall.

"With the click of a mouse, consumers can learn valuable and helpful information to help make wise car-buying decisions," said Department of Energy Secretary Bill Richardson. "Car shoppers can do side-by-side comparisons on numerous vehicle models from 1985 to the present, reviewing their fuel efficiency measures."

To improve fuel economy, vehicle owners should service their vehicles regularly, accelerate gradually, avoid engine idling and carrying unneeded items in the trunk, use air conditioning sparingly, keep tires fully inflated and aligned, and use overdrive. These techniques also help reduce air pollution and save gasoline.

The miles-per-gallon ratings appear on window stickers on all new cars and light trucks prior to sale. Consumers can use this information to identify the most fuel efficient vehicle within the class of vehicles they are considering buying.

The fuel economy estimates are generated in conjunction with EPA's vehicle emission testing program. Pre-production vehicles are tested under controlled laboratory conditions for both fuel economy and emissions.

Lists of the highest and lowest mpg ratings by vehicle class are attached.
